‘Transnational Migration, Citizenship and the Circulation of Rights and Responsibilities’ (TRANSMIC) is a project funded under the European Commission’s Marie Curie actions. This Initial Training Network will run from 1 September 2014 to 31 August 2018. The aim of the project is to contribute to the understanding of transnational migration, in particular by looking at the conditions for and effects of transnational migration, possibilities for the mobility of migrants’ rights to be enhanced, and the links between migration, citizenship, and migration and development.
The TRANSMIC project is coordinated by Maastricht University (The Netherlands), and also includes as partner institutions the universities of Liège (Belgium), Minho (Portugal), Oxford (UK), Aix-Marseille (France), Tampere (Finland) and Warsaw (Poland), as well as the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels.
In the framework of the TRANSMIC project, the Centre of Migration Research at the University of Warsaw, a leading institution in Central and Eastern Europe specialized in multidisciplinary research on international migration, is currently looking for an exceptionally strong candidate to cover a 36-month position of a Ph.D. researcher. You will work on a research project title „Migration as a Translocal Process in EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood”. You are expected to analyze mechanisms and selectivity of migration in a broad socio-economic context (transnationalism, European labour market, socio-economic transition etc.). The analysis will be based on both quantitative data (large scale surveys in Ukraine and destination countries) and supplementary qualitative material (to be completed within the project).
The selected Early-Stage Researcher will be expected to enroll in a PhD program at the University of Warsaw (preferably Institute for Social Studies, ISS UW). Starting date: preferably 1 September 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.
You must have a relevant masters degree in social sciences, be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent research experience measured from the date when the master’s degree was obtained) of his or her research career, and may NOT have a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment by CMR UW.
You should have an excellent command of English. All non-native English students have to pass the Academic IELTS (minimum score: 7.5) or TOEFL Internet-based test (minimum score: 113).
In light of the mobility requirements set by the European Commission for this project, you must NOT have lived in Poland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to taking up the position. (Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account.)
It is the policy of the TRANSMIC project to increase the number of women employed. Also members of ethnic minority groups and handicapped people are explicitly invited to apply.
You will be paid in accordance with national standards. Depending on your experience and qualifications, the pre-tax salary will be about 2000 EUR/month (cost of renting a studio apartment in Warsaw is approx. 400-500 EUR/month).
The contracted researcher will be expected to conduct research in Warsaw (Poland), but also travel, participate in network-wide training events, and spend up to 30% of the time abroad with supervisors from other institutions within the network.
